Job Summary


Responsible for legal research and writing, legal project management and administrative activities.  Independently performs work  assignments and projects originating from Legal Services  and other L.A. Care Departments.  Provide factual and legal research and project coordination for all staff as needed; prepare legal documents; assist with depositions, interrogatories and document production; draft correspondence; handle or assist with special projects, collect data and assist other departments; ability to handle highly sensitive or confidential legal and/or business information; interaction with L.A. Care business partners and outside counsel. Performance of job responsibilities and assignments must be commensurate with education and training of Juris Doctoral degree, including applying legal training and knowledge to analyze, interpret and deliver written or verbal advice and/or conclusions that are based on applicable laws.  Work is performed more independently with minimal supervision. 

Duties

Researches legal issues and writes briefs, memoranda or summaries for assigned legal matters; including gathering and compiling data and relevant fact, summarizing research,  drafting, proofreading and reviewing and finalizing documents.

 

Analyzes legal and non-legal risks associated with various topics and advises teams and management concerning legal and practical issues affecting operations, under supervision of assigned attorney.

 

Manages assigned legal projects, makes sound recommendations to legal team on project outcomes.

 

Completes legal activities, including preparation of materials. May participate in the full range of tasks involved, such as factual investigation, legal research, discovery, briefing, and case preparation.

Juris Doctor Degree or Doctor of Law Degree (J.D.)
In lieu of degree, equivalent education and/or experience may be considered.

Required:
At least 2 years work related experience in a law firm, corporate legal or government legal department.

 

At least 2 years of work related experience in a corporate legal setting handling complex assignments related to regulatory, public law or healthcare issues.

Persuasion Skills: Position interacts with government agencies to meet applicable requirements. Legal Advisor must have the ability discern the appropriateness as to whether to persuade and to successfully persuade those organizations to apply regulations and rules in  a manner that is supportive of L.A. Care's mission. In drafting legal documents, must be able to explain develop and persuade internal clients concerning recommended provisions - even if they seem unwieldy, require more time or further negotiations in order to protect L.A. Care's interests. Must be able to persuade superiors that research results may suggest alternative strategies.v

General Legal Services: The position reports to Associate General Counsel or managing attorney of General Legal Services Unit.  Legal assignments and responsibilities include project management and assistance (with some supervision) on management of assigned litigation and prelitigation matters. Responsibilities will also include assistance with public records requests, assistance on employment and other HR matters, work place investigations, trainings, budget tracking, assignments within the applicable lines of responsibilities,  independent collaboration and communication with business clients, as well as external parties.   This position will serve as liaison with assigned outside counsel and project manage assigned threatened and active litigation. 

Health Care Legal Services: This position reports to General Counsel or managing attorney of Health Care Legal Services Unit.  Legal assignments and responsibilities include handling and supporting on legal matters generally handled by this Unit and assigned to this position.
